What is rosin?
Rosin is cannabis extract made with nothing but heat and pressure. Flower, hash, or sifted kief goes between heated plates, the resin is squeezed out, and that is the entire process. No butane, no propane, no ethanol, and nothing to purge afterward, which is why it is described as solventless rather than solvent free.
Why does rosin cost more than other concentrates?
Yield. A hydrocarbon run pulls far more extract out of the same input than a press does, and rosin worth buying starts from high grade material because the process cannot hide a mediocre input the way solvent extraction can. Less product from better starting material is the whole explanation for the price gap.
What is live rosin?
Live rosin starts from flash frozen fresh plants that get washed into ice water hash first, and that hash is what gets pressed. Keeping the material frozen preserves the terpenes that drying would drive off, so live rosin carries the fullest flavor of anything in the case. It also sits at the top of the price range for exactly that reason.
What temperature should I dab rosin at?
Lower than you think, generally 480 to 540 degrees. Rosin is the most terpene forward extract in the store, and terpenes are the first thing high heat destroys. Cold cure rosin in particular rewards a cool banger and a slow draw. If it tastes harsh or burnt, the temperature was too high, not the product.
How do I store rosin?
In the refrigerator or freezer, sealed, and away from light. Rosin is more temperature sensitive than most concentrates and will separate or change consistency if it sits warm, though separation alone does not mean it has gone bad. Bring the container up to room temperature before opening so moisture does not condense onto the extract.
Rosin is the solventless end of the concentrate case: heat, pressure, and good starting material, with nothing else involved. Press temperatures matter on your end too, so keep the dab cool and let the terpenes do the work.
